Full description

This Swedish company manufactures and provides orthopedic products such as prosthetics and orthoses for animals. It was founded in Gothenburg by an orthopedic engineer, who saw the value of transferring the technology used on humans to animals. The current market consists of veterinary hospitals in Europe, Australia and New Zealand.

Today there are long lead times between the cast (plaster casting of the patient) and the orthoses being made by hand in the company’s workshop. To exemplify, a clinic in Great Britain may receive a patient (a dog) with a fracture and instead of using plaster the veterinarian orders an orthosis. This solution is much better thanks to the avoidance of abrasions and costly corrections of the plaster. Before an operation the clinic makes a cast of the limb, which is sent by post to the company. It takes approximately a week due to customs and postal services. When the company receives the cast, it is filled with modeling plaster and thereafter the bone model is used to create the orthosis. The process takes five days and is then sent back to the clinic.

This time can be cut by using a 3D-printer in the workshop and an iPhone scanning software used by the veterinarians. The company wants to develop a 3D scanning app that allows the vets to use their iPhone to scan their patients’ limbs instead of sending a physical model. The scans will be uploaded to a cloud or sent to the company’s server. The app needs to be intuitive and fail proof for the veterinarians using it, as they have limited time with the patients.

Thus, the company is looking for a collaboration with an app developer to develop a new app or use an already established app on license agreement. To clarify, it should be either a commercial agreement with technical assistance or a license agreement. The app should be based on Apple’s ARKit technology or a similar technology. User friendliness is of importance.

Technical Specification or Expertise Sought

The company would like an affordable offer of an app developed specific to its needs, i.e. intuitive scanning of animal limbs where the uploading of the scans is done either to a cloud service or to the company’s server. Specifically, the company needs expertise in developing Apple’s existing scanning technology (ARKit technology or similar) and a server/cloud service to upload the scans. Scans need to be millimeter accurate. The company is not interested in scanning services locked to one or a few devices.

Expected role of the partner
